THE MOSELLE, a leading French Department in the Electromobility field

The Moselle Department Council has decided to promote the Electromobility sector by launching an offensive strategy called «Moselle Electromobile», which is now entering into an operational phase. Emblematic of the economic voluntarism of the Department Council, it has four major objectives:

►  strengthen the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Moselle,

►  make the Department a privileged area for the development of investment projects in the electromobility sector,

►  encourage a qualification of Moselle territories looking to the future,

►  contribute to the reduction of  CO² emissions.

Moselle Electromobile: an experience which is based on the launch of the Smart ed, an electric vehicle with zero pollutant emission, « 100 % made IN Moselle »

Moselle Electromobile finds its origin in the setting up of SMART France company, present in Hambach, close to Sarreguemines, since 1997 and supported from the outset by the Moselle Department Council. Moselle Development Agency had initiated, via its Stuttgart representation office and its contacts with MERCEDES-BENZ headquarter the negotiations which led to the implementation of this project. Today, 1,600 persons work on the Smartville site which includes the assembly unit as well as its major subcontractors. DAIMLER’s choice to reinforce the activity of the existing site by entrusting it with the exclusive manufacture of the electric version of the Smart For-Two is essential for the Moselle: it contributes to the development of the automotive sector and the creation and preservation of jobs. Mass marketing to the general public is scheduled from 2012.

The Moselle: a French Department with a strong automotive sector

The Moselle automotive industry employs currently some 12,000 people (nearly 2/3 of the total Lorraine employees in this branch), i.e. 5 times more than in 1970. They work with PSA or SMART, or with one of the 100 companies dedicated to the manufacture of specialized components. Taking into account all automotive sub-contractors and associated services, the total number of jobs can be estimated to 35,000. The Moselle Department is the 2nd biggest automotive sub-contractor in France. The proximity of Germany, biggest European manufacturer and sub-contractor, makes the Moselle a particularly attractive location for numerous investors.
Beside SMART France Company which assembles vehicles, the Moselle Department and the Lorraine region (2nd French sub-contractor behind Ile-de-France region) have the industrial skills enabling them to manufacture all components of an automotive.
