Investing in GREEN BUILDING and GREEN RENOVATION in Moselle

The Green Building sector in Lorraine employs more than 60,000 people.

⇒ Green Building and Green Renovation will potentially concern more than 10,000 businesses and 64,000 employees in the Lorraine region.

⇒ The INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Information about Economy) inventories more than 520,000 houses and flats to be renovated in Lorraine, according to the decisions taken by the "Grenelle Environnement” (Environment Round Table).

> The Lorraine is the first French region for wood construction

CENTER PARCS : the new « Trois Forêts » Center Parcs Complex, opened in 2010, has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible. The construction site was HQE certified (High Environmental Quality). The Big Glass Dome is supported by a wooden frame structure (430 m3) and its roof is equipped with natural ventilation that captures the wind outside to inject it into the walls of the building. Rainwater is also collected and recovered. Half of the cottages was made with wood from Lorraine (PEFC certified), as well as the wood used as biomass to heat the swimming pools.

DOMOFUTURA
: a «high performance house » built within five weeks: designed and manufactured by the Lorraine ECOLOGGIA Company, it is entirely dedicated to renewable energies. The building covers a surface of 1,000 m²; it is made of laminated wood panels of 94 mm: the wood panels are made of spruce boards stacked in layers and glued together. The vertical walls isolation is made from outside with 20 cm of wood wool covered with a cladding. Domofutura is equipped with a geothermal heat pump, a low temperature under floor heating – free cooling as well as a ventilation system with two high performance double-flow VMC (90 %/air). Built within only five weeks, the building has reduced energy consumption by half compared to a standard building. The achievement was rewarded on the occasion of the 2008 PREBAT Call for projects.

Three major reasons to choose the Lorraine region

As the second French forest area, the Lorraine region offers huge wood resources
The Lorraine is innovating by focusing its R&D activities on agro-materials, green chemistry and biomass, using the natural resources present in the region
The proximity of Germany, where green construction has a long tradition, easily allows cooperation with competent and recognized partners.

One of the most efficient waste recycling industries in France:  The Lorraine region « imports » waste from neighboring regions because it offers a network of infrastructures able to recycle it. Indeed, the Lorraine is a leading region in the material recovering sector. One example: The D-network, composed of seven recycling hubs, is able to recycle all kinds of Building & Public Works waste such as: paints, dangerous waste, PVC, paper-cardboard, wood, metal, isolating materials, glass.

Innovation, research and development

> The VEGISOLE project gathers 4 Lorraine networks: AGRIA Lorraine, CETELOR, PROGEPI and the CRITT Wood around the development and study of the economic potential of vegetable fiber insulators. Other big industrial groups such as REHAU or ARKEMA also develop their own ecological products.
